New Super Mario Brothers

Review Written By: Alex Hinkley

New Super Mario Bros. I'm going to cut right ot the chase, New Super Mario Brothers for the Nintendo DS ranks among some of the best Mario games of all time. Aside from Mario 64, Super Mario 3, and Super Mario World on the SNES, I would put New Super Mario Bros. at fourth best. A very respectable place to be in such a successful and long-lasted franchise.

For the fans of the Mario series, all of the staples of the franchise are there. The game is a classic sidescroller where you have to rescue princess peach from the clutches of Bowser (though he looks like Bowsers son or something). The game consists of eight levels all, but can be shortened to six levels by finding secret exits. Each level has a variety of different worlds such as ice worlds or sand worlds. The haunted house also makes a return and of course the castles where the end you must fight a variation of Bowser.

There are also some new additions to the game such as new movement mechanics. Mario has a cool moving animation and you can hold down B to run faster. You can also hop off walls or do a jumping piledriver to the ground to break blocks that may be beneath you. Another new thing in New Super Mario Bros. was the addition of Star Coins. There are three star coins which are hidden in each world. As you progress from world to world in each level, there will sometimes be a path in which you can spend five star coins to get to a bonus stage or a stage that gives you 1up's or a special mushroom. A new mushroom makes an appearance in this game that when eaten, Mario grows to the size of the entire screen and can crush anything he steps out. It was a pretty neat addition.

It was interesting to see how they worked the DS touch pad into the game's controls. Throughout each world, the bottom screen shows a map of your progress through the world, so you know when you are at the half way point or when you are getting near the end but this doesn't show up during castles. There is also a sort of "reserve" mushroom slot on the touch pad that you can keep a mushroom or a flower in (if you are already upgraded) and can touch it to bring it onto the world at any time you wish. The touch pad is also included in the dozens of mini-games that New Super Mario Bros. has to offer. There's games like poker, matching, find characters, mazes, and lots of other little things that you can spend a few minutes playing.

The only downfall about this game is that it's so short. It's a really fun game that adds new elements to the series but still feels like classic Mario. The fact that you can make the game even shorter I also didn't like as I inadvertently was too good and bypassed two of the levels completely. Luckily, you can go back to any level or any world at any time to replay them so that is kind of cool. In conclusion, new and old fans of Mario will love this adventurous sidescroller. Get this game.
